to the index CONFRATERNITY MEDITATION FOR OCTOBER 29 “My imagination, what are you?--I am the stream that feeds the fountain of your mind.” Gayan of Hazrat Inayat Khan Annotation by Cherag Hamid Touchon “As the surface of the heart is known by the imagination and thought, so the depth of the mind, which is the heart, is known by feeling. The difference between thought and imagination is that imagination is an automatic working of the mind. If the mind is fine there is a fine imagination; if the mind is gross there is a gross imagination; if there is a beautiful mentality, the imagination is beautiful. Thought is also imagination, but imagination held, controlled, and directed by will. Therefore when we say: 'He is a thoughtful person', it means that this person does not think, speak, or act on impulse, but behind everything he does there is will-power which controls and directs the action of his mind.” The Sufi Message of Hazrat Inayat Khan – The Mysticism of Sound and Music - Cosmic Language – Mind and Heart “Mind has five different aspects. The first aspect is the power of thinking.
And thinking can be divided into two parts: imagination, which an outcome
of the automatic action of mind, and thought, which is a result of intentional
thinking. A thoughtful man, therefore, is not necessarily imaginative,
nor an imaginative man thoughtful. Both qualities have their place. A person
who is accustomed to think and who is not capable of imagination is far
removed from that beauty which is expressed in poetry and music, as these
come from imagination. When the mind is given a free hand to do as it likes
it dances as it were, and out of its gestures a picture is created, call
it art, poetry, or music. In whatever form it expresses itself it is beautiful.
